Using the Unboxing Trend to Your Advantage in the World of E-Commerce Packaging

Posted by Steven Sokol on Wed, May 18, 2016 @ 09:14 AM

Sokol Packaging Group would like to tell you about our new favorite trend. It's called “unboxing” and it's here to stay.

Maybe you're already familiar with unboxing. All over the internet, there's an increasing number of amateur videos showing consumers anxiously opening shipping packages only to then present their received products to the masses. And as ridiculous as it may seem, or might have seemed twenty years ago, millions of people around the world actually love to watch these videos. But when you think about it, it makes perfect sense; for that brief few minutes it takes to watch an unboxing video, the viewer not only learns a little something about the product they're interested in but also gets to share in the excitement of a fellow consumer – someone they identify with. It's like watching a birthday party with the thrill of knowing that your birthday party is just around the corner – and the presents are on their way.

Last August, we had a post entitled, Premium Packaging and Tips in the World of E-Commerce, in which we extolled the benefits of making a good first impression with a high-quality shipping package. Basically, what we said was that, in the old days, a consumer's first interaction with a brand was often at a store, grabbing a product off a shelf to take a closer look. But, in the world of e-commerce, that initial physical interaction doesn't happen until much later. Other than a few pictures, the first time a consumer interacts with a brand physically is usually after the product has already arrived on their doorstep. So the use of a high-quality shipping package is crucial to the way your brand is perceived as a whole.

Dotcom Distribution found that 52 percent of consumers are more likely to make repeat purchases from an online retailer if products were delivered in premium packaging. They also found that nearly four in ten consumers would share an image of a shipping package on social media if it was unique.

The unboxing trend provides brand owners and online retailers with a fantastic opportunity to create some much needed buzz. By turning the unboxing of a delivered product into a memorable experience that can be shared on e-commerce websites and social media, shipping packages can be used to not only delight current customers but also to wet the appetites of customers to come. A high-quality shipping package strengthens a potential consumer's sense of trust in a brand, as they can plainly see, by watching the reactions of their peers, that they will be in good hands.

Here are some ways to make your shipping packages stand out:

1. Use the right shipping box.
Brown boxes are fine, as they are recyclable, and environmental sustainability is a concern for many consumers. However, there are other ways to enhance a box so that it doesn't feel cheap. For instance, you can modify its shape and size, or add custom printing to show off your brand.

2. Besides the product, what else is inside the box?
Tissue paper can make a delivered product feel more like a gift. Likewise, there are filler options, beyond styrofoam and bubble wrap, to elevate the experience from the ordinary.

3. Don't be afraid to get creative by adding an extra touch or two.
The use of stickers, ribbons, and other add-ons sends a message about the quality of a brand and the care that is put into each transaction.

4. Surprise!
Adding an unexpected custom note, a sample of a related product, or even a small gift can go a long way towards making a consumer feel special, and that feeling will surely come across in an unboxing video.

A number of companies have done an amazing job with their e-commerce packaging. Here's a few of our favorites.

Premium Packaging and Tips in the World of E-Commerce

Posted by Steven Sokol on Thu, Aug 06, 2015 @ 10:18 AM
Packaging Tips resized 600

In the world of e-commerce, first impressions are more important than you might think, specifically when it comes to a consumer's initial contact with a brand through a product and its packaging.

With traditional retailers, initial contact with a brand often happens when a consumer spots an item on a shelf, takes an interest in the item, and then picks the item up to study it further. It's a crucial moment, in which the brand behind the product is assessed for better or worse. Obviously, in situations like these, high-quality packaging can make all the difference.

But what about e-commerce?

Beyond a strong presence on the web, a consumer's initial physical contact with a brand often doesn't happen until a product arrives at their door. With the purchase having already been made, many brand owners might think, “Why bother with high-end packaging?” – let alone high-end shipping packages! However, this would be a mistake.

Savvy brand owners know that this initial contact, the process of receiving and opening a package, is just as important as the in-store experience – if not more. It speaks volumes to the consumer about the brand's quality, about its scope, and about its relevance in the wider marketplace. It affects how they feel about their purchase and, most importantly, it affects their decision to make the purchase again. And so savvy brand owners are not only maintaining their current standards but also putting more of their resources into high-quality packaging, seeing it as a major form of communication with the consumer. Many brands are even ditching the old brown box, instead opting to ship their products in boxes more appealing to the eye. This makes for a delightful first impression, adding to the consumer's thrill of knowing their package has arrived.

Here's a colorful sample of an award-winning e-commerce shipping package from Hanky Panky, a brand we have worked with in the past. Note: Sokol Packaging did not produce this box pictured.

Consumers are ready to share.

And there's a bonus to this tactic. A recent Dotcom Distribution study has shown that consumers, especially young consumers, ages 18-25, are much more likely to share their purchase on social media and recommend a product to friends and family if it comes with high-end packaging. And every brand can use a little free, word-of-mouth marketing.

“Customers look for the ‘WOW’ factor when shopping online and when receiving a package, as they miss out on the in-store experience,” Dotcom Distribution president Maria Haggerty says in the 2013 study. “Premium packaging for online purchases delivers a brand’s in-store experience to an eCommerce customer.”

A couple of trends to consider:

1. Premium packaging, including flashier, standout-shipping packages, can make consumers feel like a brand is still concerned with their satisfaction even though the transaction has concluded. And this isn't limited to luxury brands.

2. Sustainability is our friend. The use of sustainable packaging not only appeals to today's eco-conscious consumers but also can be achieved economically if quality, recyclable materials are sought out wisely.

At Sokol Packaging Group our goal is to develop and manufacture innovative premium packaging solutions that express a brand's promise at the highest level possible. And e-commerce is another opportunity to make a great brand impression.

We'd love to hear about your experiences with e-commerce packaging.

Licensed Packaging Programs Observations at 2015 Licensing Expo

Posted by Steven Sokol on Fri, Jun 19, 2015 @ 10:05 AM
Sokol Packaging Group @Licensing Expo Las Vegas 2015

Of the many trade shows we attend each year, one of our favorites is the Las Vegas International Licensing Expo. For 35 years the Licensing Expo has brought together entertainment properties, fashion and corporate brands from over 90 countries, introducing them to a wide variety of consumer product licensees and retailers.

When licensing your brand, the process of manufacturing product and packaging is always a challenge, especially when you're working with multiple companies completely different from one another. Beyond new revenue streams, licensing should build brand equity and bring awareness to consumers, so it's extremely important that all packaging and hangtags adhere to your brand's values.

While developing the look for their packaging programs, brand owners often rely on licensees to take the lead. The problem here is that individual licensees will likely develop packaging based solely on their own product and market. At the Licensing Expo, we visited a few booths featuring product and packaging, and you could see the inconsistencies. Design and printing errors such as these erode consumer confidence and will certainly diminish your brand's equity. So how are these mistakes to be avoided?

The first step is to create a licensed packaging style guide. This guide should take into consideration the brand’s visual equity and how it applies to a wide range of product categories. The visual hierarchy of information, the use of color and typography, as well as the graphic elements, should all be defined with clear guidelines. But even with a style guide we still often find inconsistencies. Because of this, some of our long-term clients, like Disney and Nickelodeon, will supply officially approved packaging and hang tag vendors for a licensee to engage directly. This guarantees a consistent retail presentation and helps decrease approval time.
Sokol Hang Tags

The owners of the Sokol Packaging Group are very proud to have worked with Disney Consumer Products and Nickelodeon for over 25 years in this capacity. The leading retailers, like Target and Costco, also realize how important this is and have a stringent process to become an official vendor. And we should know because we've been through it!

Creating consistent packaging is critical to a brand's success. We'd love to hear about your experiences and solutions.

Four Breakout Packaging Design Trends for 2015

Posted by Steven Sokol on Fri, Apr 10, 2015 @ 02:59 PM

2015 promises to be another exciting year for packaging design, and already we're seeing several new trends on the rise. The following is a list and visuals of our personal favorites.

1) Authentic

In order to attract a loyal customer base, brands need to connect with consumers on a personal level. Sometimes this means shedding a corporate image for a more welcoming style. While vintage elements offer a sense of authenticity and even nostalgia, the use of handwriting and hand-drawn labels can make a brand more approachable. We're seeing an increasing amount of illustrations more common to the fine arts than to the traditional marketplace, a bold stratagem that puts a brand's individuality front and center.

2) High Quality, Low Impact

Gaudy, overly designed packaging with all the bells and whistles does not impress today’s eco-conscious consumers. As with their products, they want their packaging to produce a smaller footprint. That said, they still appreciate high quality design and materials. There are many brands that are providing elegant, upscale packaging while doing everything in their power to reduce waste. Recyclable materials such as kraft paper are being used creatively to achieve a handcrafted feel that stays true to the environment without skimping on style.

3) Minimalist

Also popular with brands this year is the minimalist approach. This stripped-down style involves the use of geometric shapes and patterns, color blocking, and easy-to-read fonts. It's a contemporary aesthetic, both bold and appealing to the eye. It favors straight lines and stark black and white. Open space is celebrated, with product names left to stand alone amid uncluttered backgrounds. The minimalist approach gives often overlooked items a way to stand apart from competing products with more traditional packaging.

We were very proud to produce some amazing small leather goods packaging for Coach that reflected this trend. The wallet packages featured a fun bold graphic with a paper that has a beautiful refined leather look and feel.

4) Multifunctional

It turns out packaging can do a lot more than briefly house a product while it sits on a shelf. Many brands are rethinking their packaging designs in order to give their products added value. This means looking at packaging in a whole new light, with an eye on form and function, and then creating a design concept based on the performance of a product-related task. Besides getting more “bang for your buck,” consumers respect ingenuity, which translates into customer loyalty. Multifunctional packaging comes in many forms. It can be resealable, recyclable, and even ergonomic.

First impressions are everything. This is especially true for your packaging. In this day and age, it is very challenging to capture a shopper’s attention, communicate features and benefits, and at the same time reinforce your brand image. Due to this, we realize the importance and key role that packaging plays in product presentation and brand image.

We have created this eBook as a design resource and reference. We hope it’s helpful.

Sokol Provides Sustainable Packaging for PACT Organic Underwear in India

Posted by Steven Sokol on Wed, Oct 22, 2014 @ 01:41 PM

Sustainability is a major concern for the packaging industry. And it’s extremely important to Sokol Packaging Group.

When PACT found our website and contacted us, we thought, “It looks like SEO and HubSpot inbound marketing really work!” And we couldn't be more excited, as PACT is a company that truly walks the walk when it comes to producing a top-to-bottom, organic, sustainable product.

“Sokol's quality, customer service and commitment to sustainability is just what we were looking for in a valued partner.” – Jeff Denby, Founder of PACT.

PACT Organic Fabric Underwear

From the use of non-GMO cottonseeds to the practices of their family farms and energy efficient factories, PACT strives to make a positive impact every step of the way. And that includes printing and packaging, in which they use only eco-friendly paper and vegetable-based inks.

“We really can create beautiful high quality apparel at a great price while investing in sustainability – economic, environmental, and social – within our supply chain.” – Jeff Denby, Founder of PACT.

PACT had product being manufactured in Mumbai and challenged us to create packaging using only green materials. Not as easy as it sounds in India, but our printing partner came through. They use 400 gsm kraft paper produced from an FSC-certified paper mill for all PACT orders.

FSC-certified paper is different from recycled paper, as it's sourced from a sustainably-managed forest and composed of virgin tree fibers. While each has their benefits, FSC-certified paper is often a better choice when the environmental impact of shipping and processing recycled paper exceeds that of using a local paper mill, which undergoes a rigorous certification process. In this case, due to a lack of recycling infrastructure in India, in which high-percentage, recycled paper could be provided, FSC-certified was the clear choice.

Luxury Packaging and Gift Box Trends at 2014 Luxe Pack – New York

Innovative packaging draws consumer interest, communicates the products' message, adds value and should be memorable. New ideas and materials we see in the market often inspire us. Inspirations for new packaging ideas are often found at retail, online and in other design resources one of which we will discuss here.

Below are some highlights and trends from the 2014 edition of Luxe Pack, New York. This luxury packaging trade show celebrates the very best of creative packaging solutions in the cosmetic, fragrance, personal care, food and accessory sectors. We focused on the trends that would be the most relevant to many of our customer and clients.

We saw exhibitors celebrating decorative and luxurious design. Decorative shapes and embellishments were prominent. When simple shapes were used high-metallics, impactful colors and natural tactile surfaces or textures created a high-end feel.

Interesting origami-inspired boxes are designed so that they can be opened without taking the lid off, instead using precise folding or sliding joints to open and close. Embossed embellishment added to the structures and created a very artful presentation.

Walmart Convenes Key Partners and Manufacturers at First-ever Sustainable Product Expo

Posted by Steven Sokol on Tue, May 20, 2014 @ 04:13 PM

...and Sokol Packaging Group was there.

It seems that sustainability is no longer an optional add-on — it’s an essential part of future business planning for those in the packaging industry. With increased awareness of global environmental issues, consumers are changing their buying habits. They want to know the whole story of how a product comes to be in order to gauge its effect on the environment. They ask questions:

Where does it come from?

How was it made?

What are its recycling credentials?

And in order to connect with them, packaging must reflect a commitment to sustainability in an engaging way.

Sustainable packaging has been a focus for Walmart for the past seven years, which culminated in the first-ever Sustainable Product Expo at the end of April, 2014. Being a sustainable product manufacturer ourselves, Sokol Packaging was proud to be invited to the Expo, where we had a chance to exhibit alongside some of the largest consumer product companies in the world. We made lots of connections and networked with numerous like-minded manufacturers.

Among the highlights of the Expo, was the collaboration of many attending companies, along with Walmart and the Walmart Foundation, on the Closed Loop Fund. This concerted effort to support areas without a recycling infrastructure will initially lend up to $100 million dollars to municipalities across the United States.

Club Store Packaging, Displays, and Shipper Trays

Posted by Steven Sokol on Wed, May 01, 2013 @ 11:48 AM

How to make club store packaging more effective to “Stand Up” in the retail environment.

How hot are club stores? Red hot. The annual sales of Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale Club surpassed 150 billion in 2012 and continue to grow. The sales growth for Costco increased 8% in the 12-week quarterly period ending February 17, 2013. In fact, new research from Deloitte reveals that retail club stores like Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s will be the fastest-growing retail channel over the next few years for consumer product companies. Here is a post from Marketing Daily which discusses the survey. Click to read this article on the website.

Costco How to make club store packaging, displays and shipper trays more effective in the retail environment.

Many consumer product-marketing groups are sophisticated in packaging their own brands, especially when it comes to food and drug products; however, because they fail to make proper use of the shippers and display trays, they often miss opportunities to create brand appeal and presence in a club store environment. Designing club store packaging for apparel and accessories is a challenge for product managers because, with the exception of underwear and hosiery, these products are not usually packaged in traditional retail channels. Club stores look for quality products that stack safely and sell quickly, and they want the packaging to help sell the products. The club store environment is expansive, and the aisles can be wide. If the packaging doesn’t stand out, it can easily get lost in this environment.

What does a club store look for in packaging design?

How do you create effective club store packaging, displays, and shipper trays?

What other techniques can be used to make the product package stand out?

Sokol Packaging Group has extensive experience in designing club store packaging and shipper trays, especially for intimate apparel. We have developed club store packaging for major brands like Maidenform, Vanity Fair, Nicole Miller, and DKNY. As a manufacturer, we understand the challenges of producing club store packaging. So, we’ve developed a guide with helpful tips:
